What do you think of this statement as a daily reminder? ‘I am a work in progress’. A reminder that there is no ‘end goal’ to life. That life is a journey, and every day is about learning something new. Something new about yourself, something new about the world and the people around us, something new about your capabilities and your dreams. ‘I am a work in progress’ should be our motto. It should be emblazoned on our hearts so that we learn to ease off the accelerator, ease off the pressure and remember that we are ALL a work in progress, and that’s ok!
Feeling Lighter
How does this statement make you feel? Does it make you feel lighter? Do you feel the pressure releasing? A weight lifted from your shoulders? I know I do. I feel like it’s both a permission slip and a perspective shift. It helps me to not take myself too seriously while allowing myself the space to keep growing. ‘I am a work in progress’ feels powerful without the pressure! We know that to keep growing is a good thing. To work towards a goal and to reach for the best version of ourselves is a good thing. But, when we shift our perspective on our own path and growth we can allow ourselves to grow naturally. We can understand the process doesn’t fit into a box but rather aligns with our own individual path. Our strengths, weaknesses, individual life experiences, skills and perspectives. Your life cannot be measured by someone else's experience and neither can your growth. So, holding on to the motto ‘I am a work in progress’ can serve as a reminder that your path is your own.
Consider your Work in Progress
Think about your life today, as it stands at this moment. Where have you come from? What have you been through? Where are you going? What are your greatest desires for your life? Now, what does it give to you to choose this motto for your life? If you have bold dreams, does the motto ‘a work in progress’ feel like a cop out? If so, I urge you to question where this perspective is coming from. Can we achieve in life without the pressure? Can we ease off while still moving forward? And more importantly, can we reach for the stars in our own good time? Maybe the pressure is serving as a handbrake on the way to the stars instead of the rocket fuel you are expecting it to be. Maybe learning to embrace the concept of persistent growth (if not speedy growth!) is still growth, and maybe that’s just your path, your story. Can you ease up for the sake of your peace? For the sake of allowing a natural process of transformation much like the butterfly in the chrysalis. Can it be that natures timing (or God, or Source) isn’t quite the same as yours? And, maybe there are many more aspects to the path of growth than you are currently aware of. More lessons to be learnt that need more time than you might have hoped for.
What’s the Final Product?
Ask yourself this: what vision of a finished product is tormenting you? What is this ideal that you strive for daily? This life that you envision that has you living under the weight of expectations? Can you take a step back for a moment and ask yourself if holding this ideal image out in front of you is inspiring you or quietly stealing your presence in this moment? Life is beautiful and bold. Healthy intentions for creating an ideal life for yourself are incredible. But, we have to understand the nature of life and human beings. We have to try to understand the greater plan for our lives. If we accept that we are a work in progress we will ease up. We will allow ourselves to grow ‘in time’ and to enjoy the process, instead of judging ourselves as less than because we haven’t reached our goals yet. Our goal should always be to continue to grow! If we take this on as our set point we will always be happy with ourselves because we know we are committed to growth while still allowing ourselves the pleasure of being content with where we currently are.
