Using Automatic Writing to Tap into Your Inner Wisdom

Did you know you have all the answers available to you already?  Any question you have about your life: which direction to take, which decision to make etc.  All the answers are within you.  And, there is a fool proof, easy way to access these answers!  You guessed it, it’s through automatic writing!

Just another Journaling Exercise?

Automatic writing is nothing like journaling.  You may be thinking, it’s just a new term for the same old thing, but not if you’re doing it right!  The principle behind automatic writing is to get into a flow state.  It isn’t a rattling off of your daily activities.  It isn’t even an outpouring of emotions onto the pages of your diary (all excellent practices in their own right). This is a powerful way of connecting with yourself on a subconscious level.  You might even say it is a way to connect with guidance from a higher source!  Whatever your beliefs, automatic writing is a very effective tool for tapping into that place of ‘knowing’ that all of us have access to if only we allow ourselves the space to let it in.

Higher Self or Intuition?

You could see it as a way of tapping into your higher self, or intuition.  For me, it’s like dialing a number on the telephone that connects me to the truest version of myself.  The one that sees clearly and isn’t clouded by the impact and ideals of the world.  That version of me that knows there’s a bigger picture and that knows what my soul needs in this life. This higher self (or soul) isn’t attached to the expectations and the pressures of the world.  This part of you knows only what matters beyond the daily stresses and will guide you to what nourishes your soul and leads you towards the highest version of yourself.  This part of you is concerned only about your happiness and growth as a person.  And it knows what you need.

But, What is Automatic Writing?

Automatic writing is a simple process of sitting down with a pen and paper and allowing what comes from deep within to present itself on the page.  In other words, just write – don’t think!  It means don’t write about what’s anything ‘specific’.  You can start with whatever is present for you in the moment, to help you get started, and then try to detach from what is coming up in your mind and just allow your words to flow onto the page.  It’s kind of like a journaling meditation! The most important thing to remember with this is to let your words flow.  Don’t question or judge them, just write down whatever comes up for you.  It could be an absolute mess of jumbled words that make no sense but keep going.  Somewhere along the way something valuable will present itself.  Something relevant.  The key is to not overthink the process and to keep writing even when it feels like a waste of time.  Like meditation, automatic writing gives you an opportunity to go deeper than what daily life allows.  Let in the whispers of your soul!

Our job is to Listen

The power behind automatic writing is that forces us to listen.  When you write in this way you stop the conscious thinking and overthinking that keeps you stuck.  Automatic writing pushes the ideas through and if necessary, out of your head and makes space for what is waiting for the noise to disappear before it can find its way in. Think about your intuition as a example.  It is a quiet, quiet voice.  Not loud and obnoxious.  It whispers.  It nags.  Only when it is ignored over and over again does it begin to shout.  But, using an exercise like automatic writing allows it to speak instead of being ignored.  Instead of waiting for it to shout, you allow the whisper to be heard.

What is it Good for?

So, what would you want to use this for?  You can use automatic writing simply to empty out the busyness of your mind if that is something you struggle with.  Or, you can use it to help you to get clear on something that’s been bothering you.  For example, maybe you’ve been questioning a business decision.  Start your writing with the general idea that is troubling you and then once that seed of thought has been planted just keep writing, even if it strays off course, and see what comes up.  You might find that you have some revelations about it because you’ve allowed what you really feel to come up without judgement. Skeptical?  Just give it a try!  It doesn’t have to be a 3 page journal, just keep writing until it feels like it is no longer coming from your ‘logical’ mind, but instead from a deeper more attuned place.  And see what comes up!  Try it out and let me know in the comments how it went.
